Field-Only or Complete Replacement?
A sound tank may be retained when the field is replaced, if the approved design allows it. A failed or undersized tank may also need work. Western Tidewater Environmental Health and the licensed designer determine the applicable approvals. The approved repair design determines the requirements.
Plan the Disposal Area
A suitable footprint needs the required separation from structures, wells, boundaries and other features. Evaluate usable soil and wet-season groundwater. Landscaping, paving and additions can limit both available space and construction access.
Match the Tank, Field and Treatment
A field-only repair and a complete system replacement can follow different approval paths. Have a licensed designer identify what can remain and what must change. Suitable soil, seasonal groundwater and the approved treatment requirements govern the new layout.
Replacement and Aeration Are Different
Replacement provides a new disposal area. Aeration or treatment changes are separate approaches that require a suitable system and applicable approval. No treatment add-on can guarantee recovery of a field limited by high groundwater, damaged piping or inadequate soil.
Protect the New Field
Keep vehicles and paving off the designated area. Maintain the tank and outlet filter. Spread out high-water-use activities and fix leaks. Keep the approved layout so later landscaping or construction does not damage the new system.
